Asogwa Ikeje Israel, a 35-year-old resident of Enugu, had been following the electoral process in his state with bated breath. The bye-election in Enugu North Senatorial District was a crucial one for him, as it would determine the representation of his people in the National Assembly. When the results were announced in favour of Israel's party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), he felt a mix of emotions - relief, excitement, and a sense of responsibility. Now, with the presentation of his Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Israel's journey as a senator-elect has officially begun.

The bye-elections held on June 20 in five states, including Enugu, Rivers, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano, were evidence of the resilience of Nigeria's democracy. According to INEC, the electoral body conducted 14 elections across the country on that day, with a total of 1.4 million registered voters participating in the polls. The Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election, where Israel emerged victorious, saw an impressive turnout of 44,000 voters, representing 33% of the registered voters in the area.

The presentation of Certificates of Return to the winners of the bye-elections, including Israel, is a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey. INEC's Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, May Agbamuche-Mbu, commended the politicians and their supporters for maintaining peace throughout the electoral process. This gesture is evidence of the progress Nigeria has made in ensuring free and fair elections. However, the absence of Dayo Faduyile, the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election, raises questions about the commitment of some candidates to their responsibilities.

The APC's victory in four out of the five bye-elections, including the Enugu North Senatorial District, is a significant boost for the party's morale. The party's ability to retain its grip on power in the National Assembly, despite the challenges it has faced in recent times, is evidence of its organizational skills and the popularity of its candidates. However, the party must not rest on its laurels, as there are still many challenges ahead, including the upcoming governorship election in Ekiti State.

As the newly-elected senators, including Israel, prepare to take their oaths of office, they have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on their constituents. INEC's National Commissioner, Agbamuche-Mbu, urged the elected representatives to justify the confidence reposed in them by their constituents. This call to action is timely, as the newly-elected senators must navigate the complexities of the National Assembly, while also delivering on their campaign promises.

As the newly-elected senators, including Asogwa Ikeje Israel, begin their journey in the National Assembly, they must be mindful of the responsibilities that come with their new roles. With the presentation of their Certificates of Return, they have officially become part of the legislative arm of government, and they must work towards making a positive difference in the lives of their constituents.
