The Extraordinary Story of How Great Nkor Survived a House Fire
A Father's Heroic Leap It's a chilly evening in 2003, and Great Nkor is just one year and a few months old.

It's a chilly evening in 2003, and Great Nkor is just one year and a few months old. His father, Bethel-Praise Nkor, has returned home from a church service, carrying a keg filled with fuel. As he enters the house, he hands over his newborn to a lady, cradling him to sleep. But Bethel-Praise needs to change out of his pastoral outfit, and as he does, the power goes out. He stretches his head out to the corridor, warning whoever is going to power the generator to be careful, a keg of petrol is beside it. Just as he's about to return to undressing, he sees flames of fire coming out of a room.
Bethel-Praise's thoughts are consumed by the safety of his children, all of whom are downstairs, except for one boy, Joshua, who's sleeping in the room on fire. He's not expecting any child to be there, but he sees Joshua trying to escape by running into a wardrobe. Without hesitation, Bethel-Praise jumps in and saves the boy. But his attention is soon diverted to the lady who was holding Great Nkor when the fire started. She's jumping and shouting, asking if there's anyone else in the room. The lady points to the far end of the room, where Great Nkor is sitting inside the fire, surrounded by flames and smoke.
Bethel-Praise's experience working in a factory has given him the training to respond to emergencies. He lies down and looks intently, trying to locate his child through the thick smoke. He sees Great Nkor, sitting at the end of the room, the mattress and curtains burning around him. With a surge of adrenaline, Bethel-Praise jumps into the fire, grabbing his child. As he holds his leg, his skin peels off because it's burnt and become soft. He has to put his hand under Great Nkor's buttocks, tilt his head back, and start running down the staircase with him.
The scene that unfolds is one of chaos and panic, with Bethel-Praise shouting for the car key, desperate to get his child to the hospital as quickly as possible. They've had to go fetch clothes hanging on the line because Bethel-Praise is stark naked and in a state of distress. This is the beginning of a new chapter in the Nkor family's life, one that will be defined by their bravery and resilience in the face of danger.
As I reflect on this incredible story, I'm struck by the selflessness and quick thinking of Bethel-Praise Nkor. In a moment of crisis, he puts his own life at risk to save his child, demonstrating the kind of love and devotion that we often only read about in stories. The impact of that night will be felt for a long time to come, shaping the dynamic structure of the Nkor family and leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
The incident in 2003 will forever be etched in the memories of the Nkor family, evidence of the power of love and family bonds.
