Dannii Minogue: 'I thought my BBC show would inspire more gay TV, it hasn't'

Dannii Minogue is riding the waves of emotions as the final season of her BBC Three show I Kissed a Girl comes to an end. As the host of Britain's first gay reality dating show, Dannii had big hopes for what this series would achieve. But, sadly, it's been cancelled due to funding challenges cited by the broadcaster. The show, which premiered in 2023, was a turning point in British TV, offering a platform for queer voices and relationships to be celebrated.
Dannii remembers being introduced to the show's concept, where contestants are paired up with a romantic partner in episode one, and their first interaction is a big old kiss. "I gasped at the idea," she recalls. But as the show progressed, it's clear that Dannii fell deeply in love with the concept, and the joy it brought to both the contestants and the crew. The show's impact was palpable, with the crew and contestants feeling like they were part of something special. "All their conversations were like, 'Wow, I never had this growing up,'" Dannii says, highlighting the significance of queer joy being seen on screen.
Dannii's hope was that this show would be the catalyst for more queer representation in the reality TV space. But, as the final season concludes, it seems that reality hasn't quite caught up. Despite the show's success, there's a scarcity of queer dating shows. Love Island UK is on season 13, but gay dating shows are few and far between. Even Netflix's The Ultimatum: Queer Love was cancelled after two seasons. Dannii is clearly disappointed by this, but also remains hopeful that the show will inspire change.
Dannii is a true queen of pop, and her presence on the show was always a highlight. She's stunned with a glitzy new outfit with every appearance she makes, and her enthusiasm for the show is infectious. As the final season wraps up, Dannii looks back on the journey with pride. "There's one half of me that is just like: What we really need to focus on is the joy in the show, which has been there since season one." And that, my friends, is a defiant act of representation that will be remembered for a long time.
So, what's next for queer representation in reality TV? Dannii is optimistic that the show will inspire more producers to take the leap and create shows that showcase queer relationships and stories. She's right; the show's impact has been significant, and its legacy will live on. As Dannii herself says, "In amongst the rain, there is sometimes a rainbow." And that rainbow is shining bright, thanks to the bravery and creativity of I Kissed a Girl.
