I just got back from Governor's Ball 2026 and I'm still reeling from Lorde's set. The New Zealand native closed out night one with a powerful performance that left me breathless. Here's the thing: after nine years, Lorde returned to the Governor's Ball in New York City, and she didn't hold back.

Unreleased Territory

Lorde kicked off her set with what might be a new and unreleased song. She stood behind a scratchy synth board, singing in a low, husky tone, "Don't look for me now that I'm gone/ Don't look for me, I'm gone." It was a haunting opening that set the tone for the rest of the night. I love how she's always pushing the boundaries of her music and experimenting with new sounds.

A Virgin Reboot

Lorde's setlist was a mix of old and new, with tracks from all four of her albums getting a nod. She played some of her boldest tracks, including the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Royals" and the Virgin lead single "What Was That." It was clear that this was a revamped festival version of the show, and Lorde was nervous about it. She confessed to the crowd, "This is the most nervous I've been for a show in a while. Partly because we've never done this show before, and partly because I'm obsessed with you, and I can't even pretend that isn't the case."

A Message for the Times

Lorde's set wasn't just about the music; it was also a reflection of the times we're living in. She spoke about how much the world has changed since she last played Gov Ball in 2017. "Don't you feel like so much has changed in the last nine years?" she asked the crowd. "To me, the world is unrecognizable compared to where we were in 2017. There's a loss of dignity that I feel. Our world feels increasingly unjust. And it feels harder and harder to arrive at your own definitions of beauty and truth and what is real." It was a powerful message, and one that resonated deeply with the crowd.

A Call to Action

Lorde ended her set with a call to action. "But I really feel this is real, all of us in this field," she said. "At that point, she urged fans to 'show yourself to the world,' or in other words, let their true selves shine through." It was a fitting end to a set that was all about embracing individuality and self-expression.

As I left the festival grounds, I couldn't help but feel inspired by Lorde's performance. She's a true artist and a trailblazer, and I'm so grateful to have witnessed her talent firsthand. This one na levels, and I know I'm not the only one who's still reeling from the experience.
