Faith Nwani Wants Every Child to Have Access to Books Through Book Driva Africa

In a quiet corner of a Lagos school, a young girl named Blessing hunched over a worn copy of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun. Her eyes scanned the pages with a mixture of fascination and frustration, the words blurring together as she struggled to pronounce the unfamiliar names and places. But Blessing wasn't just reading a book, she was unlocking a world of possibilities.

Faith Nwani, the founder of Book Drive Africa, knows this feeling all too well. Growing up in Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Faith found solace in books, using them to escape the harsh realities of her surroundings. As she devoured novel after novel, her vocabulary expanded, and so did her imagination. "For me, books were never just a pastime; they were a source of possibility," Faith reflects, her words echoing the transformative power of reading.

This June, Faith is bringing Book Drive Africa 2.0 to Lagos, Ibadan, Ile-Ife, and Abuja, in partnership with The Book Haven Foundation, founded by Shalom Shaba. The initiative has come a long way since its humble beginnings in Ile-Ife, where Faith distributed over 800 books and stationery items to more than 300 children across schools and an orphanage. Seeing those children hold books, their eyes lighting up with excitement, confirmed everything Faith had hoped this initiative could be.

Reading shapes far more than literacy; it shapes comprehension, empathy, communication, and the way children come to understand the world around them. By giving a child a book, Faith is creating a ripple effect that lasts throughout their lives, showing them the many worlds that exist outside their immediate environments. It's a lesson that Faith herself learned from her own experience with books, a lesson that she's now sharing with thousands of children across Nigeria.

Faith's collaboration with The Book Haven Foundation is evidence of the power of partnership in driving social change. Working with Shalom Shaba, a like-minded individual who shares her passion for literature and education, has taken Book Drive Africa to new heights. Together, they're not only improving access to books but also tackling the issue of piracy in Nigeria's creative industry. By encouraging the circulation and use of original literary works, Faith and Shalom are helping to create a more sustainable and equitable literary ecosystem.

This year's edition of Book Drive Africa will also feature creative writing classes, where children can explore their creativity and recognize the opportunities that come from it. Additionally, introductory sessions on technology and artificial intelligence will prepare the children for the digital world they're growing up in. For Faith, these initiatives are not just about providing access to books, but about creating a culture of reading that will last long after the campaign is over.

One of the things Faith is most proud of is the affirmation cards she gives each child. These small cards, inscribed with messages of encouragement and empowerment, may seem like a small gesture, but they hold a profound significance for Faith. As she reflects on the impact of Book Drive Africa, it's clear that these cards represent a tangible manifestation of the initiative's mission, to give children the tools and confidence to shape their own futures.

As Book Drive Africa 2.0 takes off in Lagos, Ibadan, Ile-Ife, and Abuja, one thing is certain: Faith Nwani's vision for a Nigeria where every child has access to books is not just a dream, but a reality that's within reach. With her tireless efforts and dedication, Faith is inspiring a new generation of readers, writers, and thinkers who will shape the future of our country.
