I just got word that David Bowie's Lightroom exhibition in London has dropped some juicy new announcements, and I am here for it. If you're anything like me, you're always on the lookout for immersive experiences that transport you to another world. Well, this one's about to take you on a wild ride. David Bowie: You're Not Alone is an exhibition that's been running at Lightroom since now, and it's been a turning point.
It's been extended until January now, and I'm not surprised - who wouldn't want to spend their evenings in pitch darkness, surrounded by the music of the legendary David Bowie? But that's exactly what you'll get at the Lightroom's immersive experience. And if you thought it was over, think again, because organisers have just announced a special day of celebration for January 8 next year, which would have marked Bowie's 80th birthday. Can you even imagine?
Adam Buxton's celebrating Bowie's music videos and screen work with a series of BUG Bowie Specials, which will be held on July 2, 3 and 4. The comedian and podcaster will be joined by archive clips and his own commentary, and trust me, it's going to be a treat. If you're a fan of Bowie's visual side, this is the event for you.
But that's not all - cellist and composer Peter Gregson will be taking the stage with a series of live shows that offer a creative response to the work of Bowie, Brian Eno and their contemporaries from the Berlin era. The shows will take place on September 3, 4 and 5, with 7pm and 9pm performances on each night. Each show will feature a programme of music that includes a newly arranged version of Steve Reich's 'Electric Counterpoint' for electric cello, Eno's 'Music For Airports', and more. And get this - each show will also include a unique Bowie covers section. I'm salivating just thinking about it.
And if you thought you'd had enough of Bowie's music, think again. Lightroom has partnered with Pitch Black Playback for three album listening parties in complete darkness, using the venue's HOLOPLOT spatial audio system. It's an immersive experience like no other, and I'm obsessed. The albums being played will be The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (July 28), Let's Dance (August 4), and Earthling (August 11). Each event will also include a viewing of You're Not Alone.
And finally, Bowie Nights will be taking over the opening night of King's Cross Summer Sounds on August 13, with a free outdoor concert in Coal Drops Yard featuring Ashaine White, Jack Kaye (formerly of The Magic Gang), and a surprise headliner. Each act will include a Bowie cover in their set. It's going to be a night to remember, and I'm so here for it.
As Lightroom chief executive Richard Slaney puts it, "Celebrating the multifaceted nature of art and artists is one of Lightroom's central missions." And that's exactly what this exhibition is doing - it's celebrating Bowie's music, his art, and his legacy in ways that will leave you breathless.
It's going to be a wild ride, folks. Get your tickets now and experience the magic of David Bowie for yourself. I'm counting down the days until I can immerse myself in this incredible experience.
