The internet thinks 'Minions' just name-checked Bonnie Blue in new film
The Misheard Sound in Minions & Monsters For Pierre Coffin, the director and voice of the Minions franchise, a recent promotional clip for Minions & Monsters has caused a stir online.

For Pierre Coffin, the director and voice of the Minions franchise, a recent promotional clip for Minions & Monsters has caused a stir online. The internet is convinced that one of the Minions, while playing football against monsters, appears to say the name of Bonnie Blue, the British adult content creator. This moment has sparked debate among viewers, with some believing it's a deliberate reference to Blue's work. For Coffin, however, it was a case of mishearing.
The promotional clip in question features the Minions playing football against monsters. In the clip, one Minion appears to ask Stuart to summon Dua Lipa or Sabrina Carpenter, before some viewers became convinced that Stuart responds by saying the name of Bonnie Blue. Now, Coffin has clarified that the line was not intended as a reference to Blue.
In an interview with The Movie Dweeb on TikTok, Coffin confirmed that the names Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter were used in the clip, but said the apparent Bonnie Blue line was a mishearing. Coffin brought up the topic because he was unsure if he was saying the other person's name, and so he went back to the original recordings to check. Upon re-examining the recordings, Coffin realised that he didn't say the name at all. Instead, he explained that the sound came from the name of one of the film's animators, Omid Rajabalipour. The "balipour" part of his name was mistaken by some viewers for "Bonnie Blue".
The Minions franchise is known for its unique language, Minionese, which is made up of fragments of different languages, soundalike phrases, and gibberish. This complex language creates opportunities for misinterpretation, as viewers may pick up on sounds or words that are not intended. The fact that some viewers heard "Bonnie Blue" instead of "balipour" highlights the challenges of deciphering Minionese.
The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the nature of Minionese and how it can be misinterpreted. While some viewers may be disappointed that the namecheck was not intentional, others may see it as an example of the creative possibilities of Minionese. Coffin's clarification has put the matter to rest, but the incident serves as a reminder of the complexities of language and interpretation.
As the Minions franchise continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how the language evolves and how viewers respond to it. With the introduction of new characters and voice actors, the possibilities for creative expression in Minionese are endless. Whether intentional or not, the misheard sound in Minions & Monsters has added another layer of complexity to the Minions universe.
With Minions & Monsters now out in cinemas, viewers can experience the film for themselves and see if they can pick up on any other misheard sounds. As the franchise continues to grow, it will be exciting to see how the Minions and their language evolve.
