"We weren't really sure what was going to finally stick": Day 1-1000 of Rayda

Ask Francis Osifo, co-founder and chief executive officer of Rayda, to recall the moment that sparked the creation of his company, and he'll take you back to a laptop stuck in customs for nearly two months. Osifo was then the chief technology officer and a co-founder at 54gene, the genomics startup that would later shut down in 2023. That laptop, which had been hired to work in Kenya, became a costly headache for 54gene, but it also revealed a deeper issue: Osifo had no reliable way of knowing what assets the company owned. As 54gene grew past 200 employees, this knowledge gap started to look like a structural blind spot.
Osifo described the problem as a "rabbit hole" of different parts, including visibility around data tracking, depreciation of asset value, and managing the entire journey from employee onboarding to offboarding. He spent considerable time exploring these challenges, convinced that there had to be a better way to help businesses manage their IT assets. After leaving 54gene in 2022, Osifo was determined to find a solution. In January 2023, he launched Rayda, an IT operations platform designed to help companies procure, deploy, manage, and recover employee devices.
Initially, Rayda focused on asset management, aiming to replace the spreadsheets that companies used to track their IT assets. However, as the platform evolved, Osifo saw an opportunity to create an 'IT command centre for globally distributed teams.' Rayda now operates in the device lifecycle management industry, estimated at $4.8 billion, and also competes in the category of startups building infrastructure for workforces that are distributed globally.
Osifo's journey was not solitary, as he was joined by Dan Duggan, who became the company's co-founder after meeting via the Y-Combinator co-founder match platform in 2024. Together, they have taken Rayda from its humble beginnings to a platform that is now being used by companies globally. As I read about Rayda's story, I couldn't help but think about the power of innovation in solving real-world problems. Osifo's determination to address the challenges he faced at 54gene has led to the creation of a platform that is making a significant impact in the IT industry.
As Rayda continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how the company adapts to the changing needs of its clients. With an estimated market size of $4.8 billion, there is significant potential for Rayda to expand its offerings and become a leader in the device lifecycle management industry. The story of Rayda is evidence of the power of innovation and the determination of entrepreneurs like Francis Osifo.
As I reflect on the story of Rayda, I am reminded of the importance of addressing real-world problems with innovative solutions. The journey of Rayda from its humble beginnings to its current status as a leading IT operations platform is a story that inspires and motivates. As the company continues to grow and evolve, it will be exciting to see how it addresses the challenges of the future and expands its offerings to meet the needs of its clients.
