Este Haim on scoring Bella Ramsey film 'Sunny Dancer' and Haim's New York-inspired fifth album

Listen, if you've been following the Haim sisters' journey, you know they're no strangers to pushing boundaries. Este, the bassist, has been making waves cinema, and her latest collaboration is all the more special because of her personal connection to the subject matter. Este recently wrapped up the band's 'I Quit' tour and tied the knot with tech entrepreneur Jonathan Levin on New Year's Eve, but her real passion project has been scoring films. Her latest endeavour, 'Sunny Dancer', premiered in the US last week and hits UK screens today (August 14).

For Haim, scoring 'Sunny Dancer' was a deeply personal experience. The film tells the story of 17-year-old Ivy, played by Bella Ramsey, who attends a summer camp for young people affected by cancer. Este's connection to the material runs deep because she attended a diabetes camp when she was in high school. "I had a very deep connection to the material because I went to a diabetes camp when I was in high school," she told NME. "I felt so alone in my illness and no one really understood it, including my family." The film's soundtrack also includes songs by Jamie xx, Fred Again., Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and CMAT, with Haim singing the praises of the Irish star. "CMAT is an incredible performer. I mean, that set at Glastonbury [last year] was incredible and breathtaking," she said.

When asked about her reaction to seeing the film, Este broke down in tears. "I mean, not to be LA about it, but I'm a triple Pisces: you look at me funny and I cry for two weeks. I'm a pretty emotional gal and cancer is a really fucked-up disease." Her emotional connection to the film is evident, and it's clear that she poured her heart and soul into the scoring process. "Bella Ramsey is such an amazing actor and they really fucking killed it. They brought such an intense emotionality and authenticity to the part. It was difficult not to cry."

As a collaborator, Este thrives in the creative process. "I work with two other collaborators every day that ends in 'y' and they happen to be my family. So I'm used to working alongside other people to make something hopefully great, and I think I thrive in that environment." Her experience working with her family members has prepared her for the collaborative process of scoring films. But scoring 'Sunny Dancer' isn't the only thing on Este's plate. Haim is also working on their fifth album, which is inspired by the New York City scene. "I've been listening to a lot of New York City music, like Velvet Underground and The Ramones, and I'm really inspired by that whole scene," she said. It's clear that Este is drawing from her experiences and emotions to create something truly special.

As Haim continues to push boundaries in the music and film industries, one thing is clear: Este's passion and creativity will only continue to grow. With her personal connection to 'Sunny Dancer' and her inspiration from the New York City scene, Haim's fifth album is shaping up to be something truly special.
