How Medwaka rebuilt itself into an emergency response platform

Rest Essence never expected to witness a harrowing medical emergency unfold before his eyes, the birth of a family friend's child, complicated by a series of unfortunate events, including hospital refusals and a lack of electricity. This life-changing experience sparked a new direction for Essence, who, at the time, was on a mission to find a problem worth solving in Africa. He credits that fateful night with opening his eyes to the magnitude of medical emergencies on the continent.

Essence's experience was far from isolated. In Nigeria and across Africa, medical emergencies are a persistent and pressing issue. The lack of a functional emergency response system, akin to 911 in other countries, only exacerbates the problem. This realization dawned on Essence when he joined the Fishbowl Challenge, a program that brought together individuals to tackle real-world problems. There, he met like-minded individuals, including Dr. Muyiwa Oluwatobi, Dr. Glennise Ayuk, and Abakar Mahamat, who shared his vision for creating a more comprehensive emergency response platform.

When Essence and his co-founders joined the project, they inherited an existing platform, initially focused on blood donation and emergency support for pregnant women. However, they soon realized that this was just a small part of the puzzle. The actual problem they needed to solve was much larger, getting people help faster when every second mattered. To tackle this, they went back to the drawing board, engaging with healthcare professionals, ambulance providers, and emergency responders to gain a deeper understanding of the emergency care system.

Medwaka, the emergency response platform, was born from the ashes of this newfound understanding. Designed to connect patients in need with nearby hospitals, ambulances, and trained first responders through a mobile app, Medwaka represents a much-needed shift in the way Africa addresses medical emergencies.
